Rodent Species
Before embarking on a rodent control program it is important to understand the precise nature of what infestations exist on farm in order to effect the optimal baiting program.
Rat species
There are two rat species of primary concern to farmers:
-
Rattus norvegicus also known as the Common, Norway, Brown or Sewer rat. This species is by far the most widespread and abundant and is distinguished by its brown to very dark fur. It lives anywhere offering food and shelter and is very common on farms, living in surrounding hedgerows as well as in farm buildings – particularly those associated with livestock.
-
Rattus rattus is known as the Ship, Black, House or Roof rat and is distinguished by its grey to black fur and large ears. This rat cannot survive well outdoors and is generally restricted to indoor situations and to upper floors and roof spaces rather than ground level.
Mice species
The only mouse species of concern is:
-
Mus domesticus also known as the House mouse. This species is again widespread in farm buildings and urban areas.
